Forgotten Coast Fishing Report

This time of year, all eyes are on red snapper. With the highly anticipated season opening this month red snapper have not disappointed; our local offshore captains have been limiting out nearly every trip. Cigar minnows as well as pilchards will be your go-to bait, cut mullet also works. You will want to find structure. We have the new MBARA GPS way points here at Bluewater, and pick up some chum while you’re here. Beeliners, scamp and red grouper will fill that mixed bag for you.

Redfish, speckled trout and flounder bite has been good in St. Joe Bay. Live shrimp under a popping cork or bull minnows with a Carolina rig have been the top baits. I had a chance to try the new Whopper Plopper, and caught several slot trout. Pompano and whiting are still being caught on the Cape beach using sand fleas and fish bites. Lane Hodges and Ty Thomas each caught a huge black drum and special thanks to Mr. Walt for helping them land their fish. Both were catch-and-release and they gave these young anglers a fish story to remember!

Fishing in the river continues to improve. The water is falling and shellcracker and bream are tearing up worms and crickets. Catfish seem to be turning their attention to chicken livers or Charlie’s stink baits. If you are bass fishing the Zoom ol monster in candy bug fished on a Carolina rig has been working well. Strike King KVD sexy frog is a great start to the morning bite.

Until  next week, good luck and tight lines,

Tom Gannaway – BlueWater Outriggers
