State champ!

Wewahitchka sophomore Bailey Cox needed just one throw of the javelin Wednesday to fly past the competition in the Class 1A state championships.

With a distance of 53.41 meters on his first throw, the equivalent of 175 feet 2 inches, Cox surpassed the best throw of the silver medalist, Bradley Cooper of Admiral Farragut, by nearly seven feet.



In the discus, Cox did not have as successful an outing, throwing the circular disk 39.66 meters on his final throw, the equivalent of 130 feet 1 inch, to finish 16th.

Port St. Joe senior Tyshawn Shackelford threw the discuss 31.25 meters, or 102 feet 6 inches, in her third attempt, to finish in 11th place.

In the shot put, she finished 13th, after throwing the shot 9.94 meters, or 32 feet 7 1/2 inches on her first attempt.

Tiger Shark junior Daren Angelino finished just out of the money in the triple jump, as he leaped 12.75 meters, the equivalent of 41 feet 10 inches, to finish in 10th place.

Tiger Shark Daniel Nguyen finished 17th in the 110 hurdles with a 16.89 time. He did not record a time in the 400 hurdles.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
