Here’s a look at some of the events happening in Gulf and Franklin Counties this weekend.
WindMark Beach Music Festival
The second annual WindMark Beach Music Festival will be held this Saturday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 7 p.m. EDT. This event will take place at different locations in the WindMark Beach Village Center. Attendees will be able to stroll while listening to live music from Daniel Pratt, Longleaf Drive, 55 South, and The Krickets. This event is free and open to the public.
Attendees are invited to bring low back chairs or blankets to enjoy the performances.
Book signing at Island lighthouse Friday
The St. George Lighthouse Association will host author Terri Webster on Friday, Sept. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lighthouse Gift Shop for a book signing of her new novel, Seaside Rescue, third in a series that takes place on the Forgotten Coast. Participate in Sea Urchin Roundup
Help collect live urchins from St. Joseph Bay in a roundup beginning at 8 a.m. EDT on Saturday, Sept. 9.
The collected urchins – which destroy seagrasses by overgrazing – will be relocated to deeper water by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Volunteers must register at the Frank Pate City Boat Ramp, located in the heart of Port St. Joe at the intersection of U.S. highways 98 and 71, on the day of the roundup. They must also provide their own boat and snorkeling gear. Event organizers will provide buckets and gloves.
Apalach Farmers Market Saturday
The Apalachicola Farmers Market is this Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mill Pond Pavilion at the end of Market Street. The market is held every second and fourth Saturday. For more info email farmersmarket@cityofapalachicola.com.
Members’ Art Market
The Joe Center for the Arts invites the public to its third annual Members’ Art Market
Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists while viewing works of all kinds in a wide variety of style, subject and media.
The show runs through Sept. 15. Admission is free. The Joe is located at 201 Reid Ave in downtown Port St Joe. Its hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. The Joe Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to educate, exhibit partner and inspire through the arts.
Museum opens new Midway exhibit
Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum in Carrabelle has opened a special exhibit about the Battle of Midway and Doolittle’s Raiders that will be on display until Saturday, Sept. 30. The museum at 1873 Highway 98 West is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 pm. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted. David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
