Memorial Day programs

Beacon Hill

The John C. Gainous Veterans of Foreign Wars Post number 10069 will be hosting a Memorial Day program at Veterans Memorial Park in Beacon Hill on Monday starting at 11 a.m. EDT.

Following the program, the VFW will be offering free hot dogs and hamburgers at the post, located at 1776 Trout Avenue in Port St. Joe, starting at 1 p.m..

Apalachicola

The Willoughby R. Marks American Legion Post 106 will host Apalachicola’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29 at Veterans Memorial Plaza, in front of the Three Servicemen Statue – Detail at 230 Market Street.
Speaking at the ceremony will be the guest of honor, Franklin County Commissioner Ottice Amison, a former paratrooper with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. Veterans are invited to wear dress uniforms in compliance with active duty standards, or approved derivatives such as service unique commercial ball caps, miniature ribbons decorations, etc.

Lanark

Camp Gordon Johnston American Legion, Post 82 in Lanark Village will be the site of a Memorial Day service on Monday, May 29. Starting at 10 a.m. there will be a short ceremony and afterwards in the pavilion will be a ceremony of “Retiring of the American Flags.” The public is welcome to attend and to bring American flags that need to be properly retired. Afterward, there will be a light lunch provided. Anyone wanting to bring a dish to share is welcome to.

WWII museum extends exhibit

Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum in Carrabelle is extending until Saturday, June 3 its exhibit on Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily in 1943. 

The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.

Operation Husky consisted of attacks on three locations in Sicily – Gela, Licata, and

Scoglitti – and launched what was “one of the largest combined operations of World War II” involving almost half a million Allied service members. It became the first piece of the Axis homeland to fall to Allied forces during the war, and served as a base for the invasion of Italy and as a training ground for many of the officers and enlisted men who 11 months later landed on the beaches of Normandy.

Glass with Class 

Prepare to be delighted and bedazzled as The Joe Center for the Arts becomes a proverbial house of glass.  

“Glass With Class” features the works of eight glass artists and runs through Friday, June 9. 

Decorative and functional pieces in all forms, colors and sizes make up this show, crafted by area artisans using hot, warm and cold processes in their studios.

The exhibit will be open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT.

Apalach Farmers Market Saturday
