This weekend in Gulf and Franklin

This holiday weekend will be rainy, but there will still be a lot to do in Gulf and Franklin Counties.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Port St. Joe

Weather permitting, fireworks will be over St. Joseph Bay in Port St. Joe starting at 10:00 p.m. EST on New Year’s Eve. The fireworks should be visible from downtown Port St. Joe and from George Core Park.

Polar Plunge

Join friends and neighbors on Jaun. 1 at 10 a.m. EST for the annual Cape San Blas Polar Plunge at Cape Palms Park. Participants will run into the chilly waters of the Gulf to kick off 2023. Donuts and coffee will be provided by Scallop Cove.

Museum looks at Third Reich’s crimes

The Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum in Carrabelle has opened a month-long special exhibit on the war crime trials of German military and government members. In 1945-46, high ranking German officials were prosecuted for war crimes and crimes committed against humanity stemming from their actions before and during the war. Throughout the month the exhibit focuses on the trials of the more notorious defendants as well as the prosecutors, charges, and verdicts. Exhibit includes wartime artifacts whose origin and path to the museum remain shrouded in mystery. The museum is across from Carrabelle Beach and is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

Carrabelle’s Country Market Saturday

The Crooked River Lighthouse continues its Country Farmer’s Market on Saturday, Dec. 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lighthouse Park, 1975 Hwy 98 West, Carrabelle. Markets are held on the first, third and fifth Saturdays.

First Day Hike

Ring in the New Year with a First Day Hike at T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Join park staff as they venture through three distinct natural communities on the scenic half-mile Maritime Hammock Trail. Enjoy views of St. Joseph Bay and the diversity of plants and wildlife along the way. Hike begins at 11 a.m. EST and is free with regular park entry.

Meet the Editor

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
