Wewa downs Wakulla Christian for first win
The Wewahitchka Gators varsity basketball team got its first win of the season last week, as they downed Wakulla Christian at home 50-44 on Dec. 6.
Three nights later, on Friday, they lost a close one at home 50-46 to Altha.
Under the direction of coach Jakob Bidwell and assistant Cameron Lister, the team had a 1-5 record going into the Tuesday, Dec. 13 away game at Liberty County. On Thursday, Dec. 15 the Gators are at home against Vernon.
The Gators opened the season at home Nov. 29, when they fell to Cottondale 61.19.
On Dec. 1, also at home, Wewa lost to Freeport 58-32. The following night, at Franklin County, Wewa fell 72-31. On Dec. 8 at Blountstown, the Gators lost 60-15.
The varsity squad includes junior captains Drake McGlon and B.J. Cole, seniors John Connor and Tim Adams, juniors Jackson Taunton, David Rich, Myka Steele, Lukas Moore, Jaden Roberts, Jace Zbikowski, Preston Stacy, Caleb Carter and freshmen Bryce Ethridge and Kaden Brooks.

Wendy Weitzel, The Star’s digital editor, joined the news outlet in August 2021, as a reporter covering primarily Gulf County.
Prior to then, she interned for Oklahoma-based news wire service Gaylord News and for Oklahoma City-based online newspaper NonDoc.com during her four years at the University of Oklahoma, from which she graduated in May with degrees in online journalism and political science.
While at OU, Weitzel was selected as Carnegie-Knight News21 Investigative Fellow among 30 top journalism students from around the country. She also was senior editor managing a 12-person newsroom in coordination with Oklahoma Watch, a non-profit news organization in eastern Oklahoma.
