Woman perishes in Wewa house fire

At approximately 12:40 p.m. Central time, the Gulf County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a report of a residential fire on South 7th Street in Wewahitchka. 

At the time of the report, it was unknown if the home was occupied. 

 According to a release from the GCSO, deputies and fire departments from the city of Wewahitchka, Wetappo Creek and Stone Mill Creek responded to the call. Once firemen were able to enter the residence, they discovered an elderly woman had succumbed to the fire. 





 The name of the deceased is being withheld pending positive identification by the District 14 Medical Examiner’s Office and notice to family or loved ones. 

 The State Fire Marshal is investigating to determine the cause of the fire. GCSO investigators are assisting with the case.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
