Garden club presents scholarships to local students
The Port St. Joe Garden Club is pleased to announce the two recipients of its 2023 scholarships. Students must excel academically as well as demonstrate a commitment to community outreach.
Nathan Duong, a senior at Port St Joe High School, was awarded the 2023 Collicott-Miller Scholarship. Nathan will be attending Gulf Coast State College to participate in the drone program and pursue a career as a drone pilot.
Emma Birmingham, a senior at Wewahitchka High School, was awarded the first annual Port St. Joe Garden Club Scholarship. Emma will be attending Florida State University in the fall to begin her studies toward a nursing degree.
Members of the Scholarship Committee, Caroline Madsen, Ann Showman and Jeanne Schlicting, concurred that selecting the finalists was a difficult task due to the strong field of applicants from both public high schools in Gulf County.
Per its bylaws, the Port St. Joe Garden Club is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. The club’s mission is to promote horticulture and conservation, undertake beautification projects in Gulf County, and participate in civic projects.
Furthermore, the organization maintains three Blue Star markers to honor veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Last but not least, the garden club supports youth education in horticulture and conservation.

Meet the Editor
David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
