Gulf County 4-Hers have great success at West Florida Livestock Show
By Anitra Mayhann | Guest Columnist
Gulf County 4-H youth participated in the West Florida Livestock Show in Quincy, Florida on March 6 and 7. The twelve youth that participated were Jared, Allie, Travis and Adam Archibald, Conner and Ellie Olsen, Ava and Riata Peck, Ashley Tucker, Sadie Scoffield, and Camden and Coulton Winder.
This activity is known as the annual 4-H steer and swine livestock project. For each youth to participate in this event, there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled within a short time frame.
The 4-H youth members learned self discipline and responsibility through the process of this project. Youth have fed, watered, gentled and groomed their steer. The steers must be trained to be led by a halter and to be loaded in a trailer for travel before the show.
The youth also have had the responsibility of tracking expenses and logging feed consumption. Youth learn the importance of feeding the correct amount at the same time each day and have worked extremely hard preparing their steer and swine for the show and sale since last summer. The youth represented Gulf County very well in the show and brought home multiple awards for their hard work and dedication.
To kick things off, Sadie Scoffield had a big win! She and her swine, “Her Swiney,” brought home Grand Champion. The awards and placings are as follows:

Congratulations to all Gulf County 4-H Livestock Club Members! Well Done!
On a heartfelt note, the overwhelming outpour of love and support for the late Mr. Michael Archibald and his family were felt throughout the show. Michael had a great love for agriculture and a strong desire to help the livestock club grow. He leaves an amazing legacy behind with his 5 children whom he loved dearly, four of whom participated in this year’s steer project.
The Gulf County 4-H and Livestock youth want to thank our buyers and supporters, without them this project would not be successful.
