Get fall plants Saturday morning at garden center
The Port St. Joe Garden Club will hold its September monthly meetings on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET at the Garden Center located at 216 Eighth Street.
At both the daytime and evening meetings, members will be preparing for the Fall Plant Sale, scheduled rain or shine, for Saturday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. until noon ET at the Garden Center.
There will be an enticing array of healthy plants perfect for patios, yards, or indoor container gardens. Succulents, exotic bromeliads, showy gingers, and even a very large Little Gem magnolia will be available for the early bird shoppers to browse… all at prices that will put the big-box stores to shame.
The profits from this plant sale enable the PSJ Garden Club to achieve its chartered mission which is to foster charitable, educational, or scientific endeavors. The club tailors its outreach to generate interest in horticulture and conservation of soil and natural resources, as well as the beautification of Gulf County sites. In alignment with the objectives of the National Garden Clubs, this local chapter also has erected and dedicated Blue Star highway markers as memorials to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
In the midst of summer heat, garden club members are planning three months ahead and kicking off a food collection to support the local food pantry’s Thanksgiving dinner drive. Nonperishable staples such as canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup, stuffing mix, cornbread mix, canned yams, and cranberry sauce will round out a bountiful holiday menu.
The club meets on the first Thursday of the month in both the late morning and early evening to accommodate the demanding schedules of busy men and women. Throughout the year, informative speakers, engaging workshops, and community focused projects are slated. The public is always welcome to attend.

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
