Jamboree opens Gene Raffield football season
Last Saturday, Sept. 18, the three Port St. Joe teams in the Gene Raffield Football League traveled to Carrabelle for a jamboree against teams from Franklin County to kick off their respective 2021 season.
The contests were held at the Will Kendrick Complex on Kenneth Cope Street.
According to Matt Herring, commissioner of the league, the day was “more like a classic than a jamboree,” because each of the age groups played a full game rather than just a half.
This is because the teams from Wewa, originally scheduled to participate, opted out so they could play in Blountstown at a similar event.
The first game between the Port St. Joe Buccaneers, ages 11-14, resulted in a 22-0 win by Franklin County.
In the next game, the St. Joe Jaguars (9-10) prevailed by a score of 22-0.
Finally, the youngest age group, the Dolphins (6-8), lost to Franklin 14-0.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
