Wewa Gators defeat Trenton Tigers
Wewahitchka broke a 14-14 tie on a two-yard run by Damian Hughes with less than six minutes left in the game and held on to defeat the Trenton Tigers 22-14 Friday night, Sept. 16.
With the win, the Gators improved to 3-1, while Trenton remained winless at 0-4.
Down 14-0 at halftime, Wewa broke into the scoring column on a 33-yard burst by P.J. Garrison, and trailed 14-6 going into the final frame.
“We just didn’t play (the first half),” said Gator head coach Bobby Johns. “We turned the ball over three times in the half.”
Caleb Carter provided local heroics when he snatched an interception and rambled 58 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Hughes successfully ran for the two-point conversion to even the score.
With new life, the Gator defense forced the Tigers to return possession to the offense, and the Wewa ground attack worked its way inside the five to set up Hughes for his touchdown.
After Garrison’s two-point conversion run, Wewa led 22-14, and that would be all of the scoring for the
game.
“We laid an egg for a half,” said Johns, “and should have lost the game. We went the last two games (wins over Bell and Vernon) without turning the ball over. But tonight we lost the turnover battle again.”
Trenton “played our game,” said Johns. Playing ball control, “they didn’t snap the ball until about five seconds remained on the play clock.”
But, Johns added that “as beat up as we’ve been, we’ll just take a win when we can.”
The Gators will play host to the 1-2 Bozeman Bucks on Friday, Sept. 23.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
