9/11 Memorial golf outing set for Oct. 7
The second annual 9/11 Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing that supports the Martin S. Niederer 9/11 scholarship for the Gulf County high schools had to be postponed last week due to the bad weather.
But it’s on tap for Thursday, Oct. 7, once again at the St. Joe Bay County Club.
There will be a shotgun start at noon. Prizes include $1,000 for winning team of Select Shot Format, A 50/50 raffle, door prizes, silent auction, live music, Bloody Mary and Cigar bars and more are all part of the fun. Dinner is hosted by JR and Shaggy Bay Supper Club.
Entry is $150, with sponsorships available anywhere from $100 per hole to $1,000 corporate sponsorships.
All proceeds go to support the Martin S. Niederer 9/11 Memorial Scholarship Fund, named after a gifted athlete who was an all-star point guard growing up in western New Jersey who later starred at the University of Vermont. Niederer, 23, had not long before started his job as a securities trader at Cantor Fitzgerald, when he perished on Sept. 22, 2001 when the World Trade Center buildings were toppled in the 9-11 attacks.
The scholarship is each year presented to a Gulf County High School senior who has excelled in the classroom and in athletics in Martin’s memory. The scholarship provides the student $5,000 for college expenses, and sends the student and a parent on an expense-paid trip to New York City to visit the 9/11 memorial and learn about Martin’s life and the other 2,796 souls lost that day, and the many lost since then in 9/11 related diseases and sickness from the cleanup and recovery.
Analisa Treglown, a member of the Port St. Joe High School Class of 2021, was last year’s winner.
“This scholarship will be a financial blessing for both myself and my family,” Treglown wrote to the scholarship committee. “The reason why I chose to apply for the scholarship was because I was impressed with Martin S. Niederer’s character and his love of life. One can tell he was loved, supported, and adored by family, friends, and even strangers.
“With this opportunity, I intend to lead by his example while attending the University of South Florida, and even throughout my life!” she wrote. “Thank you again for believing in me and my future endeavors.”
Anyone that wants to participate or play in the tournament can call the St. Joseph Bay Country Club at 850-227-1751.
