Apalachicola, St. Joe to face municipal elections
It’s an off-year election, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be attention paid to the most local elections of all, that of the cities.
These non-partisan elections will take place in mid-August in the case of Port St. Joe, and in early September in the case of Apalachicola.
In Apalachicola, the terms of two city commissioners, Seat 3’s Anita Grove and Seat 4’s Donna Duncan will be up for another four-year term.
Franklin County Supervisor of Elections Heather Riley’s office said qualifying for those seats will be held from noon on Monday, June 23 to noon on Friday, June 27,
If they have not done so already, city residents have until Aug. 4 to register to vote to take part in the election, which is slated for Sept. 2 at the Fort Coombs Armory. Early voting is from Aug. 23 to 30 at the supervisor of elections office in Apalachicola.
In Port St. Joe, non-partisan elections for two-year terms will be conducted Aug. 19, with qualifying week from June 9 to 13, also from noon Monday to noon Friday.
Mayor Rex Buzzett has already declared his intention to seek another two-year term. Also up for re-election at Group 1’s Eric Langston and Group 2’s Steve Kerigan.
Gulf County Supervisor of Elections Rhonda Pierce said those who wish to qualify can do so either by petition, in which they would need 310 signatures, or 10 percent of the registered voters; or by fee, which is $677.12 for any position.
If nobody wins outright at the election, which means 50 percent plus one of those who cast their votes, then there will be a run-off in November. Pierce said.
