Lady Tiger Sharks run record to 8-5-1

It took a free kick with about 12 minutes left in the second half for the Lady Tiger Sharks to get her done, but that’s all it took as Port St. Joe won its fourth straight on Dec. 17.

Junior Alexa Pavon, who had been fouled about 20 yards out from the goal, banged it in over a wall of Bay Lady Tornadoes.

“I’m super happy,” said coach Justin Gerlach. “It’s pretty surprising when I look at our schedule.”

As a team, the Lady Tiger Sharks have scored 26 goals from 16 assists, with Pavon nailing 16 of those goals and four of those assists. Senior Jessica Dunn has six of those goals and six of the assists. The remaining four goals and six assists are scattered among the remaining offensive players.

“They are our two most valuable players from a scoring standpoint,” Gerlach said.

The team opened their season in Tallahassee Nov. 6 with a tough 1-0 loss to the St. John Paul II Lady Panthers.

Port St. Joe righted the ship Nov. 8 in Panama City with a 3-1 win over the Rutherford Lady Rams.

The next night, also in Panama City, Bay High, a Class 4A school, got a 3-1 win over the visiting Lady Tiger Sharks

Traveling home on Nov. 14, the Lady Tiger Sharks once again steadied the ship with a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Walton Lady Braves.

On Nov. 16 at home, Port St. Joe was shutout by the McKeel Academy Lady Wildcats, an outstanding private school of Lakeland that is now sporting a 9-1 record.

On Nov. 19 at home, the Lady Tiger Sharks edged arch-rival Franklin County 2-1, setting the stage for the upcoming Jan. 14 match-up in Eastpoint.

On Nov. 21 at home, the Lady Tiger Sharks tied the Marianna Lady Bulldogs 1-1.

Then after the Thanksgiving break, Port St. Joe traveled to Panama City on Dec. 3 and routed the Bozeman Lady Bucks 6-1.

But on Dec. 6 it was time to take on the Maclay Lady Marauders, a fearsome district opponent, and the home crowd in Tallahassee watched their team shutout Port St. Joe 6-0.

On Dec. 10 in DeFuniak Springs, Port St. Joe edged the Walton Lady Braves 4-3 and began their four-game streak.

On Dec. 12 at home, the Lady Tiger Sharks shutout Rutherford 3-0 and then two days later, again at home, downed the Wakulla Lady War Eagles by an identical score.

The Bay win Dec. 17 marked Port St. Joe’s fourth in a row, but then two days later, the Class 6A Leon Lady Lions shut them out 5-0.
