Wewa shooting sends man to intensive care

One person remains hospitalized and another is in custody following a Thursday evening, Aug. 22 shooting in Wewahitchka.

The shooting took place at about 6:15 p.m. just east of the Sesame Street and East River Road intersection. The victim has been transported to the hospital and one person is in custody.

Joni Carr, 28, of Wewahitchka, is in custody and faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

According to a release from the Gulf County sheriff’s office, the shooting was preceded by an incident that occurred approximately two miles away from the shooting. That incident prompted a white female driver to pursue and follow a white male in another vehicle on East River Road, read the sheriff’s release.

The male stopped in the middle of the road, about a quarter of a mile past the high school, and approached the female in her vehicle. The female produced a firearm and fired multiple shots as the male approached, striking him once in the chest. The male was unarmed and is hospitalized in the intensive care unit in stable condition.

“There’s no domestic relationship here. This was an isolated incident,” said Sheriff Mike Harrison. “Although it happened near the high school, it had no connection to the school. The shooting occurred during a junior varsity football game near school property, but none of the players, staff, or spectators were in danger.”

Following the shooting, the crime scene was secured and included a portion of East River Road that has been closed off. Residents that live at the end of East River Road had to detour through the Rish subdivision.
