Camps for cowboys, grilling, turtles

Through a series of short summer camps, the UF-IFAS Gulf County Extension Service covered everything from cowboys to turtles to make sure young people had a chance to learn as part of their leisure time.

Anitra Mayhann, the county’s 4-H Youth Development and Family and Consumer Science agent said the last camp on July 2, which focused on grilling, taught the kids everything from food safety, food preparation, marinating and grilling temperatures, as well as showing the young chefs how to make homemade chocolate chip cookies from scratch.

Landon Whitten and Julia Newsome emerged victorious in the BBQ competition. Also part of the camp was an appearance by Wesley Newsome, with the Stone Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Department, who spoke on fire safety.

“It was the first time we’d done grilling,” said Mayhann. “It was great.”

The earlier four camps covered the gamut, with one focused entirely on baking for the county’s new baking club, one on sea turtles in Port St. Joe, a youth naturalist camp at the Buffer Preserve, and a cowboy camp at the arena in Wewa.
