A camp debuts for music, art and drama

The Joe Center for the Arts got mad this summer about theater.

In addition to the Joe’s regular Wild Kingdom summer art camp, whose second session runs Monday and Wednesday afternoons through July 17, the center offered its first ever Music, Art and Drama (MAD) camp for 24 upper elementary and middle school students last month.

For a week, the students met in the morning to learn about voice and projection and about the basics of music. They made drums to learn rhythm on, and masks to wear during their showcase, where they offered up drama pieces and sang songs.

The MAD Camp team included Kristan De La Rosa, Donna Elkins, Heather Haas, Melanie Martin, Linda Matela and Judy Loftus, who worked with artist Renee Valentine to paint on the wall the background to “The Lion King,” parts of which the students performed June 21.
