Celebrating the sweet impact of bees

The GFWC Wewahitchka Woman’s Club will be celebrating World Bee Day a little early this year as they along with hundreds of people attend the Tupelo Festival held at Lake Alice on Saturday, May 18.

Club members  will have a booth set up with information on “Why We Need Bees,” the   benefits of being a GFWC member as well as information on one of our affiliates, Heifer International. But the piece of resistance that attracted a crowd last year to our booth was our scrumptious strawberry shortcake which we will have again this year.

Bee enthusiasts and environmentalists around the globe prepare to celebrate World Bee Day May 20, a day dedicated to recognizing the vital role bees play in our ecosystems and economies.  Bees, often underestimated in their significance, are powerhouse pollinators.  With their insatiable appetite for nectar and their fuzzy legs, these tiny creatures facilitate the pollination of countless plants, contributing significantly to global food production.  In fact, it’s estimated that one-third of global food production relies on animal pollination, with honeybees accounting to 80-90% of this crucial role.

One organization deeply invested in the well-being of both bees and communities is Heifer International, a global non-profit dedicated to eradicating poverty and hunger through sustainable, community-driven initiatives.  Heifer International operates on the principle of providing families with the means to achieve self-sufficiency, often through the distribution of animals and accompanying agricultural and value-based training.

For those inspired to contribute to this cause, Heifer International offers a simple yet impactful way to make a difference.  A $30 donation can provide a family with honeybees, a hive, a bee box, and essential beekeeper training, empowering them to thrive through beekeeping.  For more information on Heifer International and how  bees help the environment go to heifer.org/bees

On World Bee Day, let’s celebrate the invaluable contributions of bees to our world.  Whether it’s through supporting local beekeepers, or advocating for pollinator-friendly policies, we can all play a part in safeguarding these essential pollinators and ecosystems they support.  Together, we can ensure a sweeter, more sustainable future for generations to come.

The GFWC Wewahitchka Woman’s Club, a non-profit, 501c(3) volunteer charity organization meets the second Tuesday of the month, at 5:30 p.m. CT at the Wewahitchka Senior Citizens Building. For more information reach out to gfwcwewawomansclub@gmail.com.
