Port St. Joe advances to regionals
While they were unable to topple the Bozeman Bucks, ranked the best Class 1A baseball team in the state, in the district finals, Port St. Joe’s 19-6 record and 12th place ranking in the state ensured they would advance to the regionals.
On Tuesday night, May 7, the Tiger Sharks traveled to Cottondale (18-8) top open regional play.
In the district title game May 3 at Bozeman, Port St. Joe spotted the Bucks two runs in the first inning, and then tied it after three with one run in each of the next two innings.
In the top of the fifth, the Tiger Sharks added a pair of runs to jump to a 4-2 lead, but the Bucks scored four times in the bottom of the inning, and then added three more in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 9-4 win. The Tiger Sharks outhit the Bucks 14-10.
The Tiger Sharks won a tight 7-6 contest against Franklin County in the April 30 semifinals at Vernon.
Franklin County, which had four hits on the night, jumped to a 2-1 lead after one inning, but St. Joe tied it in the top of the fourth, and then added four runs the next inning to go ahead 6-2. The Seahawks got three runs to narrow the deficit to 6-5. Both teams added a run in the seventh.
Wewahitchka won their opener April 29 13-7 over Vernon, but then endured a four-inning mercy rule 15-0 loss against Bozeman the following night.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
