Wewa downs Blountstown, now 2-7

After downing Holmes County and more recently Blountstown, the Wewahitchka Lady Gators now stand at 2-7.

On Feb. 25 in Bonifay, Wewa got its first win of the season with a 7-3 win over the Lady Blue Devils.

Junior pitcher Severa Haney struck out seven and gave up two earned runs for the win. Junior Emma Rustin led the team at the plate by nearly hitting for the cycle, with a single, a triple and a home run. Teammate Jayla Clayton had a single and triple, while teammate Lauren Brant had a single and a double and Aubrey Bailey a pair of singles.



On Feb. 27 in Franklin County, the team fell 10-1 to the Lady Seahawks, and then the following night at home, lost 20-3 to the Liberty County Lady Bulldogs, the large margin due to a nine-run seventh inning. 

Pictures Laila Suber, Maycee Johnson and Haney each struck out one as they combined pitching duties.

A 16-1 four-inning away loss followed on March 3 to the Wakulla Lady War Eagles, as Haney struck out five and walked two in two innings of work.

At Blountstown March 4, Wewa won 10-8, as Haney struck out seven and gave up five earned runs for the win.

Brant led the team with two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, while Clayton banged out three hits and Paityn and Laila Suber each two.

Wewa fell 9-1 to the Trenton Lady Tiger on March 7, despite Haney striking out 14, walking two and giving up just one earned run in the loss.

Emma Rustin led the team with three hits, including a double and a home run.



Meet the Editor

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
