Hodges pens winning American History essay

On Feb. 26 at a regularly scheduled meeting, the St. Joseph Bay chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized Mabel Hodges as the local winner of the DAR National American History Essay Competition.

After reading her essay, “The Influence of John Paul Jones on the American Revolution. He Had Not Yet Begun to Fight,” Hodges, a home-schooled senior who resides in Wewahitchka, was awarded the American History bronze medal by Mazie Stone, chairwoman of the St. Joseph Bay Chapter’s American History Committee.

Guidelines for the competition required students to select one figure from the Revolutionary era between 1773-1783, and discuss how they impacted the War for Independence.

Two new, prospective members were also welcomed at this meeting. The St. Joseph Bay Chapter strives to make a difference in the community by fulfilling the mission of the DAR, which is to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
