Wewa Lady Gators open with three losses

The Wewahitchka Lady Gators softball team have opened the season with three home losses, falling to Altha, Port St. Joe and Chiles.

On Feb. 18 at Altha, Wewa fell 10-5, as pitcher Severa Haney hurled a complete seven-inning game, striking out seven, walking three and giving up just four earned runs on nine hits.

Eden Rustin had two hits, including a double and drove in a run. Lauren Brant had two hits and two RBI, as Jordan Ashby and Laila Suber each had singles, and Emma Rustin and Haney each a double. Aubrey Bailey drove in a run.



On Feb. 20, the Lady Gators fell to Port St. Joe 10-0. (See related story)

On Feb. 21, Wewa fell 5-2 to Chiles, as they banged out seven hits to the Lady Timberwolves’ nine.

Haney struck out five and walked two over seven innings, as she allowed eight hits, but just one earned run.

Eden Rustin and Bailey each had a pair of hits, while Jayla Clayton and Lauren Brant each had singles and Emma Rustin a double.

Bailey and the two Rustins each stole two bases.

Meet the Editor

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
