Port St. Joe ousted in regional semis

The Port St. Joe Tiger Sharks basketball squad’s stellar season came to a sudden end last week in the regional semifinals, as they were nudged 59-54 by the Munroe Bobcats.

Coach Sandy Quinn’s squad, the district runner-up, traveled to Quincy Feb. 12, and for much of the game, the Tiger Sharks had the edge.

St. Joe, the second seed in the regional, led 10-6 after the first quarter, and 28-20 at the half against third-seeded Munroe.

But the Bobcats took charge in the second half, winning the third quarter 11-8 and then taking charge in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Tiger Sharks 28-18.

Munroe’s victory was a team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zelden Chukes, who posted six points in addition to eight rebounds and five steals. Chukes has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 17 times he’s played. The team also got some help courtesy of Antwon West, who went 5-for-8 on his way to 11 points and four steals.

Port St. Joe’s defeat dropped their record down to 21-6.

Munroe has won nine of their last 10 contests, to post a 20-7 record as they prepared to meet Crossroads Academy Monday, Feb. 17. The Scorpions defeated the Bobcats twice during the regular season, 51-31 and 70-54.
