Flower contest to showcase marigolds
The Port St. Joe Garden Club, in collaboration with the Gulf County libraries, announces its third annual flower contest, which this year will feature marigolds as the contest flower.
The contest will feature a diverse range of categories. Participants of all ages are encouraged to showcase their horticultural talents and creativity. From vibrant blooms to floral arrangements, the contest aims to recognize and reward the most impressive displays of floral artistry.
Seeds are available at both Gulf Country libraries. Judging will be on Thursday, May 22 in Port St. Joe at 3:30 p.m. ET and in Wewahitchka at 4:30 p.m. CT. The award ceremony will immediately follow.
Categories are:
- Best Bloom: Single flowers that captivate color and form.
- Best Arrangement: Creative and aesthetically pleasing floral arrangement
- Best Pot of Marigolds: Six-inch pot only
The entries will be evaluated based on various criteria including originality, presentation and overall impact.
The judging panel will consist of experienced horticulturists and members of the local gardening community. Age groups will be judged as follows: Youth under 12; Youth 12-21; and Over 21.
Winners of each category will receive a prize, such as a gift card. Winning entries will be displayed at the libraries and featured in the local newspaper celebrating their achievements.
Those interested in participating can pick up a free seed packet at their nearest Gulf County library or otherwise purchase their own. Detailed gardening guidelines are available at both locations. Additionally, participants can seek advice and resources from the libraries’ gardening sections.
“The collaboration with the Gulf County libraries aims to foster a deeper connection within the community, while promoting a shared love for nature and gardening,” said Annelie Smolenski, chairman of the garden club’s seed committee.
