Library lecture to focus on fisheries’ future

On Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. ET the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association will present “Building Our Fisheries’ Future” at the public library in Port St. Joe.

MBARA builds and deploys artificial reefs to enhance and support sustainable marine conservation and fisheries off the coast in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico off Mexico Beach. They recently set a milestone of establishing 1,000 patch reefs, or small artificial reef habitats for local fisheries.

Formed in January 1997 the non-profit organization has deployed more than 290 artificial reefs and has worked to conduct and promote scientific research and evaluation of reef designs, biomass development, and fish production.

During the library presentation attendees will learn about these beautiful reef systems,

including how MBARA’s Memorial Reefs offer families the chance to create personalized, lasting ecosystems that honor loved ones while promoting a sustainable marine environment.

This lecture is part of the association’s goal to educate the public about the importance of reef systems in the marine ecosystem and the impact they have on the coastal communities where they are built.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at the Corinne Costin Gibson

Memorial Public Library, at 100 Library Drive, Port St. Joe. It is made possible with support from the Friends of the Gulf County Public Libraries. Refreshments provided by local bakeries will be served prior to the event. For more information. Call 850-229-8879 or visit www.nwrls.com.
