Christmas ornaments benefit humane society
For the past seven years, the Port St. Joe Garden Club has created and sold an annual commemorative Christmas ornament with proceeds from the sale earmarked for donation to a local community organization.
This year the Gulf County Humane Society was the designated recipient of the $1,500 proceeds from the ornament, designed by Sarah Darden and Mary Amann.
“Members had an extra pep in their step to make as many ornaments as possible as they knew the money was going to them,” said Leelee Doughty, club president. “A huge thank you to all the shoppers at our Christmas in the Garden event that made this donation possible.”
The club is planning more great things for 2025. Between now and March 31, the club, which for more than 77 years has been actively involved in many community projects. will be accepting new members. Those who join also become a member of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Deep South Region of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Club, the largest volunteer gardening organization in the world.
Never been a gardener? Not a prerequisite for membership. The club meets on the second Thursday of the month, from September through May, at 10 a.m. ET. Come a little early and meet and mingle before the meeting.
The Jan. 9 meeting program will focus on propagation with a hands-on workshop. The February meeting will focus on native plants; March will feature a learning experience on orchids and bromeliads; and then the annual plant sale will be on Saturday, April 12.
Interested in becoming a member of this organization? Please drop in on one of our meetings or contact Membership Chair Debra Brumage at psjgardenclub@gmail.com. Applications are accepted January through March of this year.
