Lady Tiger Sharks open at 2-4

The Port St. Joe girls basketball has opened the 2024-25 season with a record of 2-4.

Under the direction of Coach Keion McNair and assistant coach Halie Jasinski, the girls opened at North Bay Haven Dec. 5, and sustained a 48-18 loss to the Lady Buccaneers.

The team was led by six points each from senior Addy Silcox and junior Ellie Newman, with sophomore Jayla Hill scoring four and junior Nijah Quinn two.



The Lady Tiger Sharks bounced back the following night at home, defeating district rival Wewahitchka 47-24.

Four players, junior Brooklyn Bishop, eighth grader KK McNair, Silcox and Newman led the team with six points each, with Hill adding four, seventh grader Lizzy Burns and Quinn each two, and seventh grader Ellasyn Hensley one. Hill, Burris and Bishop each pulled down seven rebounds, and Hill stole the ball eight times to lead the team.

For Wewa, the team was led by eight points each by junior Shamiya Cole and eighth grader Jayla Clayton, five from freshman Janessa Small and two by senior Carly Hatcher.

On Dec. 7, Port St. Joe was vanquished at home by the West Florida Lady Jaguars 64-5, as Newman scored all of the team’s points, on two buckets and a free throw.

On Dec. 10 at home against Marianna, the Lady Tiger Sharks lost 49-26 to the Lady Bulldogs. They were led by eight points each by Silcox and McNair, six by Newman and four from Hill.

On Dec. 11 they forfeited what would have been a road game against Arnold.

Then at home Dec. 13, Port St. Joe scored their biggest win so far this season, a 64-15 triumph over the Lady Yellowjackets.

McNair posted a game-high 15 points, with Newman pitching in a dozen, Silcox eight, and Hensley seven. Hill and Burris each scored six, Bishop and Queen each four and sophomore Anna Vanheerdan two. Newman led the team with six steals.

Meet the Editor

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
