Tiger Sharks look for second win
Port St. Joe’s young boys soccer team, packed with eighth graders and freshmen and with no seniors, are looking for their second win of the year as they open 2025 on Jan. 9 at Rocky Bayou Christian.
Under the direction of Coach Brian Burkett and assistants Jeff Root and Bo Spring, the team’s record now stands at 1-6.
In their opener Nov. 8 at Rutherford, the Tiger Sharks lost 5-1. Freshman Lucas Rodgers scored the lone goal, on an assist by sophomore Stratton Levins. Freshman Finley Spring and junior Grant Bartley led the team with three steals each. Sophomore Ollie Fonseca, who took the loss, had seven saves behind the goal, while Levins had three.
In their home opener Nov. 12, Port St. Joe was shut out 4-0 by district opponent Marianna. Junior Josah Beach led the team with three steals. Freshman goalie Evan Fogle took the loss, while Fonseca had seven saves behind the net.
On Nov. 19, the Tiger Sharks lost by a similar score to district rival Franklin County. Beach led the team with six steals, while freshman Brandon Sandoval had four. Fonseca, who had 15 saves, took the loss.
On Dec. 3 at Bozeman, the Tiger Sharks got their first win, downing the Bucks 4-1. Beach had two goals and an assist, while junior Asher Peacock and Sandoval each had goals. Freshman William Trochessett had an assist. Bartley led the team with four steals, and sophomore William Shoaf with three. Junior Connor Howell, with 10 saves behind the net, got the win.
On Dec. 12 at home, Port St. Joe was shut out 4-0 by Rutherford. Bartley led the team with six steals. Howell, with seven saves, took the loss.
The next day, at district rival Maclay, the Tiger Sharks were shut out 10-0 by the Marauders.
On Dec. 16 at St. John Paul II in Tallahassee, Port St. Joe fell 4-1 to close out 2024. Sandoval scored the lone goal and Peacock led the team with three steals. Howell, with 10 saves, took the loss.

Meet the Editor
David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
