SAFE Place takes teens to FAMU visits
On Nov. 9, The SAFE Place PSJ, Inc., took 12 youth in grades eight through 12 from Port St. Joe and Wewahitchka to Florida A & M University in Tallahassee to take part in their Fall Preview.
Students were able to take part in a career fair, college tour, and musical performance by the FAMU Marching 100 Band.
“This was a great opportunity for students to take part in the HBCU experience and broaden their thinking about attending college,” said Program Coordinator Kenneth Monette, M. Ed. “We want to give students in Port St. Joe and Wewahitchka an eye-opening experience that could spark the idea that college is a real possibility.”
“Life is more than your local surroundings,” he said. “The more worldly opportunities we open our youth up to, it will provide them a broader way of thinking.”
Monette thanked fellow organizers, Pastor Johnnie and Pastor Shirley Jenkins, for allowing this event to take place, as well as Deacon Mitchel Smiley for driving the students to and from their destination.
The SAFE Place, PSJ, Inc. is a 501c3 not-for-profit whose mission is to impact, inspire, and improve the lives of individuals and families in the community.
