Tiger Sharks down Wewa, open 2-1

After losing a close one to Rutherford in their home opener Dec. 3, the Port St. Joe Tiger notched two more home wins, over North Bay Haven and Wewahitchka.

Against Rutherford, who won 57-53, Port St. Joe was led by sophomore Zay Jenkins, with 15 points, three assists and three steals.

Sophomore Jayden Reese followed with 13 points and nine rebounds, while junior Elijah Harris added 11 points and six rebounds.



Senior JD Becton added six points and five steals, sophomore Larry Mase and senior Kanaan Jefferson each three points, and freshman Justus Barber two.

While the Tiger Sharks hit 15 of 20 from the free throw line, they shot just 27 percent from the field.

Against North Bay Haven Dec. 5, the Tiger Sharks won 84-60, as Jenkins scored 32 points, including 7 of 12 three-pointers. He was a perfect 5 for 5 from the charity stripe.

Reese added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Jefferson had 13 points and five rebounds.

Barber added eight points and 14 rebounds, while Becton had five points, Mase four, and senior Elijah Robinson, sophomore Darion Cherry and Harris each two.

Against Wewahitchka Friday night, the Tiger Sharks led from start to finish, to end with an 80-47 victory.

Jenkins led with 23 points, and eight steals, while Reese had 13 points, and Barber 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Robinson contributed eight, senior Jamal Leslie six, Mase and Becton each five, senior Donnell Hills, Jefferson and Cherry each two, and senior Daren Angelino one.

Wewa was led by freshman Rhemy Patrick with 16 points, and junior Kaden Books with 15. Junior Jayvyn Walker added six,  and junior Bryce Ethridge four, while Tyran Williams scored three, senior Antone McNealy three and senior Cyliss Post one.

On Dec. 3 at home, the Gators lost to Blountstown 80-49.

Ethridge led the team with 12 points and 10 rebounds, with nine points and six rebounds from Williams, nine from Brooks, five by Patrick, and three each by sophomore Tucker Adkinson and McNealy.

On Dec. 5 at home, the Gators defeated Wakulla Christian 81-48, led by 14 points each from Patrick and Brooks. Williams added nine points and seven rebounds, McNealy nine points and six rebounds, and Walker nine points. Sophomore Hunter Price scored five, and Adkinson two.

Meet the Editor

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
