Club works to better our neighbors’ lives
Since its founding in 1932 and becoming federated in 1936, the GFWC Wewahitchka Woman’s Club has been a vital force for positive change in the community. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are dedicated to serving others through advocacy, education, and volunteerism. Our club’s legacy of community service spans over nine decades, and we continue to make a difference in Wewahitchka and beyond.
Over the years, our club has spearheaded countless initiatives to improve the lives of our neighbors. From starting Wewahitchka’s first library to establishing the first Little Free Library at Lake Alice, we have promoted education and literacy for generations. Additionally, we’ve supported local families by raising money for Wewahitchka High School Senior Scholarships, a tradition that spans more than 80 years. Last year alone, we awarded $6,000 to help students achieve their academic dreams.
Our commitment to addressing local needs includes donating over 1,000 pounds of food and funds to the Wewahitchka Ministerial Association to fight food insecurity. We’ve also provided blankets, coats, hoodies, clothes and socks to children in need, ensuring that every child feels warmth and care.
Next year, we will proudly support the 150th anniversary of Wewahitchka’s founding in 1875, raising funds to help celebrate this historic milestone while continuing to champion projects that benefit our community.
As part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), we support initiatives that extend beyond our local community. This year, we are working to help fund the GFWC Florida President’s Project “Flight to Honor,” in which we will help to raise $150,000 to sponsor Florida’s first all-female veterans’ Flight to Honor. This all-inclusive trip to Washington, D.C., in October 2025 will honor 175 Florida female veterans for their service and sacrifices. Also, we are backing the GFWC Florida Junior Director’s Project “One More Child,” a child welfare agency based in Lakeland that helps foster and adoptive children, trafficked youth, and struggling families. Clubs across Florida will partner with them to organize drives for diapers, food, and school supplies, supporting vulnerable children and families across Florida.
Our club also contributes to the work of esteemed GFWC affiliates, including:
- Canine Companions for Independence
- Heifer International
- Hope for Justice
- Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY)
- Operation Smile
- St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
- UNICEF USA
- Alzheimer’s Association
