Bucks edge Tiger Sharks 21-18
The contest between Deane Bozeman and Port St. Joe, rescheduled from Sept. 24 to Thursday evening, Oct. 11 was a defensive struggle most all night.
That was until the Bucks managed to come away with a non-district 21-18 victory on their home field over the Tiger Sharks.
Bucks’ quarterback Hayden Gay (9-of-17, 180 yards) looked to be on pace for a huge night, throwing for over 100 yards and a touchdown in just the first quarter.
Despite the hot start and the offense simmering down, the Bucks were able to make the plays needed to at the very end trailing 18-14 with three minutes to go. Gay’s long pass set up Bozeman’s go-ahead touchdown run by Jayden Spurlock.
Trailing 14-3 for most of the first three quarters of the game, the Tiger Sharks stepped up in the final period with a comeback effort. Senior Donnell Hills had a 32-yard run for a touchdown, which brought the Tiger Sharks within 14-11.
Junior Eli Harris was the workhorse for Port St. Joe’s offense and finished the game with 115 yards on 24 attempts.
Bozeman senior Lakota Johnson scored the game’s first touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Gay. He also had a 31-yard end around run, threw a touchdown pass and ended with over 100 all-purpose yards on the night.
“Our defense had to bow its neck, but that Port St. Joe team is playing with a lot of heart and their offense is one of the best that I have coached against this year,” Bozeman head coach Bronson Sweatt told Sports Illustrated. “We honestly just had to stay calm, composed and we won a game when it was tough and had to fight to come back.”
