Lady Gators run record to 9-4

So far this season, it’s been the Wewahitchka Lady Gator volleyball team that has run up the best record on the Forgotten Coast.

Now sitting at 9-4, Wewa has split its two outings against Franklin County, and has defeated Port St. Joe. 

The trip to Bristol last Monday, Sept. 30 was to be a decisive confrontation with the 11-3 Liberty County Lady Bulldogs. 



Under the direction of Coach Ray Glisson and Assistant Coach Brooklyn Whitter, the team consists of seniors Logan Taylor, Jaylan Badillo and Danielle Robinson; juniors Emma Rustin, Izzie Shealy, Hadley Davidson, Laila Suber, Aubrey Ake and Aleah Brown; and sophomores Eden Rustin, Jordan Ashby and Makani Young.

Franklin County lost its opener at Wewa Aug. 19 in four, as they fell 25-19, came back to win the second 25-23, and then fell 26-24 and 25-22. The JV team lost to the Lady Gators in three, winning the opener 26-24 and then falling 25-19 and 15-12.

The Wewa Middle School A team won in three, winning 25-23 before falling 26-24 and 21-19. The Franklin County B team was victorious, losing the first 15-12 but coming back to triumph 16-14 and 15-10.

On Aug. 20 at home against Liberty County, Wewa lost in three straight but got back on their game Aug. 22 at FAMU Developmental Research School with a 3-1 victory, winning 25-15, losing 25-22 and then taking the last two games, 25-23 and 25-18.

On Aug. 26 at home, Wewa down Tallahassee Community Leadership Academy in four games, winning 25-14, falling 24-23 and then winning the last two, 25-18 and 25-17.

On Aug. 27 at home, the Lady Gators lost in three straight to Bozeman, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-21.

They got back in the groove at Altha Aug. 29, winning in four, with a victory in the first game 25-16, a loss in the second 27-25, followed by 25-20 and 25-16 wins.

Wewa won by forfeit Sept. 5 against Jefferson County, and then dropped a match in four games Sept. 9 at Franklin County. The Lady Seahawks defeated Wewa in four games, losing 25-19, and then coming back to win 25-20, 26-24 and 25-23.

On Sept. 10 at home, Wewa regained their winning ways with a 3-1 win at home against Rutherford. The Lady Gators defeated the Lady Rams 25-15 and 25-17, and then lost 27-25 before clinching the victory with a 25-12 win.

Wewa beat Altha at home Sept. 12 in three straight, winning 25-15, 25-23 and 25-21.

On Sept. 17 at home in a rematch against FAMU, the Lady Gators won in three straight, 25-7, 25-14 and 25-18.

In a district match-up at home Sept. 19, the Lady Gators downed Port St. Joe in four games.  Wewa opened with a 25-16 win, and then St. Joe evened the score with a 25-18 victory. The Lady Gators then took the next two games, both by a 25-22 score, for the win.

On Sept. 23 at Cottondale, the Lady Gators fell in three to the 13-1 Lady Hornets, falling 25-9. 25-21 and 25-11.



Meet the Editor

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
