Panama City man killed in head-on crash west of Wewa

A 54-year-old Panama City man was killed Friday evening on State Road 22 in an auto accident just west of Wetappo Creek near Road 3A.

At about 7:35 p.m., the man was driving east on SR 22 when a sports utility vehicle in the westbound lane approached, driven by a 44-year-old female from Tucson, Arizona.

The sedan driven by the Panama City man veered to the right and onto the south shoulder, and then veered to the left, crossing the centerline and into the westbound lane.

The sedan struck the SUV head-on and came to a stop in the middle of the road, while the SUV came to final rest in the grassy area on the north side of the road.

The Panama City man was pronounced dead at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital, while the woman was transported to Ascension Sacred Heart with critical injuries. Both individuals were wearing seatbelts.

Gulf County Fire Rescue, Gulf County EMS and the Gulf County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
