Wewa’s Guffey signs to play for College of Central Florida
Seated at a table located in front of home plate between her parents, Jennifer and Jamie Guffey, and flanked by her teammates and coaches, Wewa Senior Pitcher Haley Guffey signed a scholarship with the College of Central Florida Patriots.
The ceremony took place just after the Wewa and Port St. Joe junior varsity teams had played to a scoreless tie in a pitcher’s duel between Gator 8th grader Severa Haney and Tiger Shark 8th grader Haley Green.
Following Guffey’s signing, she went on to strike out 14 St. Joe batters and lead the varsity Gators to an 8-2 win over St. Joe. (More details about the contest will be in next week’s Star.)
Central Florida is a junior college competing in the Mid-Florida Conference, which they won in 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2021. The 2019 team finished 3rd in the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association).
In making her decision to become a Patriot, Guffey said that she would be “more challenged there,” and that “they will push me harder. I like to work for my spot,” and “I’m going to go there, work hard, and do the best I can.”
